With his work “Văii Morilor,” Koós’s interest in analyzing objects and spatial situations expanded an now includes a phenomenon the artist recently encountered in a small Rumanian city called Aleșd (Hung.: Élesd). All over the city piles of logs are spread and especially concentrate in a neighborhood of housing blocks. Here the massive piles fill entire parts of the surrounding areas and become characteristic landmarks within the city. The archaic looking piles stand in sharp contrast to the housing blocks that were once built as a promise for modern urban life. Behind the absurd landscape is a simple fact: the city of Aleșd is not connected to gas and people heat their homes and apartments with wood brought from nearby forests, one of them called “Valea Morii.”
